Preventative care

Wear: You can avoid tarnish by wearing your jewellery often. The oils in your skin will “clean” the silver and keep it looking shiny.

Avoid exposure: Contact with household chemicals, perspiration, rubber, chlorinated water, or any substances which contain sulfur (e.g., mayonnaise, eggs, mustard, onions, latex, wool), will cause corrosion and tarnish — so it’s a good idea to remove silver jewellery when doing household chores. Direct sunlight also causes silver to tarnish, so be sure to take off your silver jewellery before you go swimming and sunbathing.

Lotions, cosmetics, hair spray and hair products, and perfumes are also “enemies” of silver and will accelerate tarnishing. There’s a reason generations of women have been getting dressed with jewellery last, as a finishing touch!

Storage: As exposure to air tarnishes it, storing silver in airtight plastic bags with anti-tarnish strips is a great preventative measure. Just make sure you don’t store multiple jewellery pieces in the same bag: silver is a soft metal, so the individual pieces can scratch each other. Link or chain bracelets should be kept unclasped or unhooked to prevent scratching as well. If you can’t use plastic bags, try to make sure that the storage area has low humidity. You can also place a piece of chalk, a packet of activated charcoal, or a container of silica gel in the storage area to minimize tarnish.

How can you take care of gold vermeil jewellery?

By taking good care of your gold vermeil jewellery, it will preserve the longevity of each piece. Store your rose gold and gold vermeil jewellery out of direct sunlight and in a cool dry place. Soapy water can give your gold a dull sheen so remember to remove your gold pieces before bathing. Chemicals such as perfumes, lotions or cleaning products can affect vermeil jewellery greatly so it's always best to apply your products before putting on your jewellery.

How can you clean gold vermeil jewellery?

To brighten up your jewellery, simply polish it with a microfiber polishing cloth or a specialist gold or rose gold polishing cloth.

Gold-filled care Instructions

Step 1
Don't allow people to touch your gold-filled jewellery. Excessive touching can lead to surface friction. This could lead to reactions between the alloy and your skin and you could end up with discoloured gold-filled jewellery.

Step 2
Use only warm water and a mild soap-based detergent to clean your jewellery.

Soak your jewellery pieces for no more than a minute in the water. If you have to scrub, use a soft baby toothbrush and be gentle. Never use a tissue or any other paper-based material to clean the pieces. Always pat the jewellery dry.

Step 3
Air dry your jewelry overnight before you put it away. Excessive moisture when stored can lead to jewellery that is corroded and tarnished.

Step 4
Use a jewellery cloth on your gold-filled pieces to bring back the sparkle that may have washed off with the water. This often happens after gold-filled jewellery comes in contact with water and soap.

Step 5
Do not give your jewellery a matte coating to preserve it. This coating sometimes eats through the gold layering and can turn your jewellery unsightly.

Step 6
Wrap each piece of gold-filled jewellery in tissue and put it in a box to store. Constant rubbing against other pieces of jewellery can make it lose its sheen.
